If you are lucky enough to own an early seventies BMW 2002 you have just found an ideal driving watch! This watch is an excellent alternative to Omega or Longines watches of the same period, but at a lower purchase cost. The dial is exceptionally clean, and while the case has a few marks original features such as the brushed bezel are still crisp.
The dial and case combination mean pretty much any colour strap could work with this watch.
The lug size of 22mm is unusually large for the period, and the grey/green strap fitted is a modern new item. The swapped case back aside, this is a good watch in great condition. Historically Eterna and ETA were always linked (ETA is an abbreviation from Eterna from when Eterna set up ETA) so it always preferable to see an ETA movement in their watches. This has the ETA 2824 movement, a 25 jewel automatic movement with quick set date. Eterna, always a pioneer of new movements, also had the Eterna Sonic electronic watch available, and the early Quartz watches, but the 2002 range were all automatics. In 1973 the watch industry was investing heavily in different technologies.

It is this date, plus the styling, that leads us to believe this watch was made circa 1973.

The second clue is the serial number is for a few years before this movement started production in 1972. How do we know? Inside the caseback there is a reference to a Bulova Patent, which indicates it was for an Eterna-Sonic electronic watch. However this watch has hasd a replacement case back at some point, possibly mixed up at service. Normally we can accurately date Eterna watches from the serial number on the case back. This is to be expected from Eterna from this period.A very clean and tidy men’s vintage Eterna-Matic 2002 in a stainless steel case. The movement for this watch is stamped with its own serial number, however the COSC standard “Adjusted to…” print is not there. This watch I believe is 100% authentic in this respect. This simply then meant that you had to take the manufacturers word that it had been specially prepared and adjusted. It appears that makers, like Eterna, was able to sell watches as Chronometers without having them presented for certification at COSC or equivalent. There is a distinction between “Certified Chronometers” and just Chronometers. This watch was dated 1974.ĭo a Google search on ALCAN and Eternamatic to see some more of these. The caseback has the ALCAN logo cast (not engraved) in addition the name of this person and year the watch was presented is engraved. It seems that higher ranking / management guys got the Chronometer versions:-) I have the original boxes from the first owner. They presented the watches to employees, normally after 25 years in service. The watch here was sold to the large Canadian company ALCAN. ĮTA was separated from Eterna back in the days since Swiss law blocked the manufacture of own, complete watches, together with ebauches.ĭue to the close connection, very often back in the 50s and 60s Eterna would develop new movements, and later transfer these to ETA for sale to others.
This entry was posted in Repair, Service, Swiss, Wrist Watches by Christian. The dial is in great shape, and so are the hands. When I remove the barrel, I notice that the lid isn’t on.Īnd everything is ready for the cleaning machine.Įscape wheel, pallet fork and cap jewels after the epilame treatment.Īs the old barrel (on top of the movement) kept opening up (so there was a reason why the lid was off when I took the movement apart), I got hold of a used barrel from an ETA2824. If you look closely at the barrel wheel (it’s not a click wheel, as the click is on the crown wheel), you can see missing and damaged teeth. With the auto winder taken off, the movement starts beating. Very snappy date change, and a lovely 28,800 bph movement. Yes, that looks very much like an ETA2824. It’s not working, so let’s see what’s up! This Eterna came all the way from Norway, and it needs a fair amount of attention! The calibre 12824 is pretty much an ETA2824.
